If AI Does the Beginner Work, How Do Beginners Become Experts?

 


AI may create a bigger problem than replacing entry-level work. If AI does the work beginners used to learn from, where will tomorrow's experts get their experience?

Think about someone's first year at a company.

They usually don't start with the hardest decisions.

They research information.

They organize meeting notes.

They build spreadsheets.

They draft reports.

A more experienced employee checks their work and points out mistakes.

The beginner fixes them and tries again.

Over time, the work gets harder.

Eventually, the person who once needed help becomes the person others ask for help.

We call that experience.

But what happens when AI starts taking over the work at the bottom of that process?


AI Is Good at a Lot of Beginner Work

Many tasks that AI can handle well have something in common.

They are repetitive, structured and happen on a computer.

Summarizing documents.

Drafting text.

Searching for information.

Organizing data.

Creating basic analysis.

These are also the kinds of tasks that many junior employees have traditionally done while learning their jobs.

For a company, automating some of this work can make perfect sense.

If AI helps turn a ten-hour task into a one-hour task, productivity goes up.

But from the beginner's perspective, there is another side to the story.

Those ten hours may also have been ten hours of practice.




Are Entry-Level Jobs Already Changing?

It is too early to say that AI is simply "eliminating entry-level jobs."

Hiring is affected by many things: economic growth, interest rates, company budgets and changes that began before generative AI became popular.

But there are signals worth watching.

Researchers at the Stanford Digital Economy Lab analyzed large-scale U.S. payroll data.

They found that employment for workers ages 22 to 25 declined by 16% relative to earlier trends in occupations most exposed to generative AI.

Meanwhile, employment for more experienced workers in those same occupations was relatively stable or continued to grow.

That does not mean:

"AI fired 16% of young workers."

The researchers are careful about that distinction.

Other forces affect employment too.

But the pattern raises an important question:

Why might early-career workers feel the effects first?


Companies May Be Asking More From Beginners

Another clue comes from PwC.

Its 2026 Global AI Jobs Barometer analyzed more than one billion job advertisements.

PwC then looked more closely at about 2.4 million entry-level job postings in the United States.

It found something unusual.

Entry-level jobs highly exposed to AI were seven times more likely to ask for skills traditionally associated with senior employees.

Skills such as:

judgment,

leadership,

strategic thinking,

and communication.

There was another surprising result.

Since 2019, entry-level jobs undergoing this shift toward more senior skills increased by 35%.

Other entry-level jobs declined by 10%.

That doesn't look like a simple story of AI destroying every beginner job.

Something more complicated may be happening.

The definition of a beginner job may be changing.


Here's the Strange Part

Imagine a new accountant named Alex.

In the old system, Alex might spend the first few years doing relatively simple work.

Checking hundreds of transactions.

Comparing receipts with numbers.

Finding mistakes.

Asking senior accountants questions.

After seeing thousands of transactions, Alex begins to recognize what looks normal and what looks strange.

Five years later, Alex can spot problems quickly.

Ten years later, Alex may notice things that younger employees miss.

Now imagine AI handles much of the early work.

AI checks the transactions.

AI finds unusual numbers.

AI drafts the report.

The company then tells Alex:

"Check whether the AI is right."

There's just one problem.

How did Alex learn what "right" looks like?

That's the real issue.


Can You Skip the First Step of the Career Ladder?

Think of a career as a staircase.

Traditionally, it might look something like this:

Simple work

Harder work

Work requiring judgment

Complex problems

Expert

Now imagine AI removes some of the first steps.

The company may still need humans at the top.

But it may start asking beginners to jump directly into work requiring judgment.

PwC describes this shift as the "seniorisation" of entry-level roles.

In simpler terms:

Beginner jobs are starting to look more like senior jobs.

PwC argues that employers and educators may need to redesign training, mentoring and early-career pathways so people can develop those higher-level skills earlier.

And some companies are already experimenting with that idea.


Companies Are Starting to Rethink Training

EY, for example, has expanded part of its traditional internship model with a program called Career Residency.

After an eight-week summer internship, selected students can continue working part-time for eight to twelve months while completing school.

They get more time on real projects, along with coaching and training.

One reason for the change is AI.

As AI handles more basic tasks, skills such as judgment, critical thinking and interpreting results become more important earlier in a person's career.

That represents an important change.

In the past, companies could often train beginners simply by giving them beginner work.

In the future, they may need to design learning experiences on purpose.


This Is Bigger Than a Few Tech Companies

The World Economic Forum examined this issue in a 2026 report focused specifically on AI and entry-level work.

It estimates that more than one in three young workers globally are employed in occupations that could experience moderate to high transformation from AI.

So this isn't only about programmers.

The same question can affect:

accounting,

finance,

law,

marketing,

consulting,

office work,

and many other professional careers.

Many of these industries have traditionally relied on the same basic system:

Beginners do simpler work first.

Then they become experts.


But AI Could Also Help Beginners Learn Faster

There is another side to this story.

AI doesn't only remove beginner work.

It can also give beginners abilities they didn't have before.

A junior employee can use AI to understand a difficult report.

Someone who barely knows how to code can ask AI to explain the code.

A beginner can analyze data that might once have required a specialist.

They can create a first draft quickly and spend more time thinking about the difficult parts.

PwC's data does not show every AI-exposed entry-level job disappearing.

In fact, entry-level roles demanding more advanced skills have been growing.

So it may be too simple to say that AI is destroying the career ladder.

It may be changing the shape of the ladder.

And that creates a different problem.


How Will Tomorrow's Beginners Learn?

If AI handles more simple work, companies may need to create new ways for beginners to gain experience.

Instead of simply asking a junior employee to pass along an AI-generated answer, a company could ask them to:

find what the AI got wrong,

explain why it was wrong,

compare several possible answers,

talk to the actual customer,

handle unusual situations,

and

see what happens after a decision is made.

In the old system, doing the work was often the training.

In the new system, companies may have to think more deliberately about how the work creates training.




The Real Talent Problem of the AI Era

For a company, hiring fewer beginners might look efficient today.

If AI can draft documents, analyze information and handle repetitive tasks, fewer junior employees may seem like an easy way to reduce costs.

But think ten years ahead.

Today's beginner becomes tomorrow's experienced employee.

Then a manager.

Then an expert.

Then perhaps the person making the company's most important decisions.

If companies repeatedly decide:

"AI does the beginner work, so we don't need as many beginners,"

they could eventually face a strange problem.

Where will the experts come from?

That may be the more important question.

Not simply:

How many entry-level jobs will AI eliminate?

But:

If AI does the easy work, where will humans learn the judgment required to do the hard work?

AI may change beginner jobs.

That isn't necessarily bad.

But if companies remove the first steps of the career ladder, they may need to find another way to teach what those steps used to teach.

Otherwise, the biggest risk may not be that AI replaces today's beginners.

It may be that we stop creating tomorrow's experts.
